What exactly is herpes?

Herpes viruses cycle between periods of active disease with blisters containing infectious virus particles, which may last two to 21 days and be mild to severely painful, followed by a period of remission. Genital herpes, however, is often asymptomatic and can be found inside and outside of the vagina, as well as on the penis and around the anus. After the initial infection, the viruses are transported along sensory nerves, where they may reside lifelong—that is unless they are destroyed by medical ozone therapy!
