Digital Detox Workshop Teaches The Power of Off

Nancy Colier, author of The Power of Off: The Mindful Way to Stay Sane in a Virtual World, will hold a workshop on that theme November 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the New York Open Center, 22 East 33rd Street. A psychotherapist in private practice, Colier is also an interfaith minister, a mindfulness teacher, a relationship coach and a blogger at Huffington Post and Psychology Today.

Her workshop will focus on strategies for connecting with ourselves and disconnecting from 24/7 technology. “In the digital world, we have far more possibilities but find less meaning, take more selfies but feel less self-worth, communicate more but feel less connected,” she says.

“We’re interested in mindfulness, but we use our devices to escape the present moment, and ourselves.” Being continually distracted and always on leaves us “twired”—simultaneously tired and wired, living in a perpetual state of anxiety, she says.

Colier, who uses mindfulness techniques in her therapy practice, will explain how to become more mindful and present, with more control over time, attention and life—“and ultimately to find freedom in tech, not from it.”

Admission is $125 for Open Center members and $145 for nonmembers. For more information, visit www.opencenter.org/power-of-off . “The Power of Off” book is available everywhere books are sold.
