NewLife Expo and NewLife Magazine were created by entrepreneur Mark Becker—nicknamed “Yogiman” by Robin Williams—who in 1975 opened Serenity, the first yoga center and herb shop in New York City. A master yogi who has trained tens of thousands of yoga students and more than a thousand yoga teachers, Becker has taught at Hunter College, Boricua College, and even Juilliard. He is also a master herbalist. Serenity carried more than 400 herbs in bulk, giving New Yorkers their first place to buy herbs in capsules or tinctures.
“When I first wrote about people doing yoga, taking herbs, drinking wheatgrass juice, having air and water purifiers, taking vitamins, drinking bottled water, or using crystals and magnets, people thought I was crazy,” Becker says with a laugh. “Maybe I was, but I wasn’t stupid. Sometimes I feel like a have 20/20 vision and the rest of the world is wearing bifocals.”
Becker created NewLife Expo in 1990, bringing it to NYC, Florida, Seattle, and Chicago. Since then it’s become America’s longest-running expo and a staple in NYC and Florida, not only as a conference but also as a community of like-minded people, he says. They gather to meet each other and hear from renowned experts in conscious living, such as Deepak Chopra, Dr. Oz and James Van Praagh. The expo also showcases exhibitors from around the globe, creating a venue where New Yorkers and Floridians can sample cutting-edge products and services.
“The beautiful thing is, admission is affordable, as little as $10,” Becker says. “Aren’t you worth taking a weekend out of your life, to make it healthier, more interesting and more fulfilled? Who knows, you might even fall in love.”
Vaccine cards are required. Those who can’t attend in person can sign up virtually at NewLifeExpo.com.
