Electric Toothbrushing Is Best, Manhasset Dentist Says

While a “manual” toothbrush is “definitely better than nothing,” dental technology today has far outstripped the efficiency of manual brushing, says Dr. Linda Golden, owner of Golden Dental Wellness Center, in Manhasset. In fact, she’s very specific about the technology she recommends.

“We recommend the Philips Sonicare to all our customers,” she says. “First, an electric toothbrush like the Sonicare delivers more than 30,000 brush strokes a minute, compared to the manual brush’s 300. All those extra strokes deliver a more efficient brush without running the risk of you overbrushing, which can damage tooth enamel. In addition, the electric brush can help hard-to-reach sections of the mouth receive adequate brushing.”

Another downfall of the manual toothbrush is its single “setting”: namely, “brush back and forth as hard as you want,” Golden says. With Sonicare, users choose a comfortable setting and then hold the brush over different portions of their mouth until a short buzz prompts them to move it.

“This ensures that all portions of your mouth receive equal treatment and that you are brushing for the proper period of time,” she says.

Many electric toothbrushes also have a mode that lightly targets the gums, to help prevent degenerative conditions like gingivitis and keep the gums from bleeding.

“We also have plenty of Philips Sonicares in stock,” Golden says. “Our hygienists can teach you how to use one during your next visit.”
