Pauline Leong co-founded LIC Vision Associates five years ago in Long Island City, offering full-scope eye care and services and a large selection of ophthalmic glasses and sunglasses. Along with Dr. Scott Tisdale, she also founded Vernon Gantry Eyewear, a wholesaler of on-trend, high-quality, affordable frames. Since its launch in 2017, Vernon Gantry has rapidly expanded, with some 200 accounts in the United States and Canada.
Life’s mission: Helping people to see—literally and figuratively.
Work: Optometrist, hoping to expand into holistic healing and writing.
Proudest achievements: Opening two businesses within three years of getting very sick from a physical and emotional illness, all while healing myself using natural methods.
Expectations for the future: I aim to write a book blending some of my life story with the visionary messages that have been channeled to me through my optometry work and my personal exploration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, reiki, palmistry, spirituality and the metaphysical sciences.
Favorite apps: Spotify and YouTube. I love music and watching videos on everything from guided meditation to learning how to use a pressure cooker! These are brilliant modalities for people to share and enjoy life’s pleasures.
Favorite website: TripAdvisor. I’m a huge fan of traveling.
Local causes supported: VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity); A Promise to Peru; Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen.
Favorite thing about Natural Awakenings: I enjoy reading about all the different ways to achieve spiritual and physical contentment. It’s also a valuable resource that spotlights the incredible and vast healing community available to us for mind, body and soul mastery.
Most-frequented healthy food restaurants: Souen, Divya's Kitchen and the oh-so-yummy hot food bar at The Health Nuts on 45th and Second Avenue.
How do you invest in your community? As a small business owner, I understand the role of creating opportunity for my employees and cultivating a mindset of success, optimism and personal growth. I try to set an example by being mindful, honest, fair, compassionate and positive toward others. I also mentor students pursuing careers in optometry and the eye-care industry, and I welcome them to intern at our practice.
Favorite quote: “Do not dwell on the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” —Buddha
What are you doing to be the change you want to see in the world? I am learning to fully accept the person I am meant to be and to be comfortable in my own skin. Self-realization has been key to growing stronger and more aligned with my happiness and integrity. Finding my true purpose and speaking my truth allows me to be a positive influence on those around me. I want others to realize that hope and faith is powerful medicine.
