Jyogan, a renowned Reiki shihan, or master teacher, will be teaching Reiki 1, 2 and 3 this fall at the Namaste Bookshop’s Healing Center, in Manhattan. He is one of few teachers who have studied reiki directly in its birthplace of Kyoto, Japan, and also one of the few who teach the traditional style of this hands-on healing technique, which originated in 1922. “The practice of reiki spread to the West over the years, and many of the traditional teachings were changed,” he says. “This new style became to be known as Western-style Reiki, in the Takata lineage. Western-style Reiki comes in many forms, most of which have a New Age twist. For example, Crystal Reiki, Chakra Reiki, Angelic Reiki— none of these styles were a part of reiki originally.” The traditional style of reiki remains pure, simple and unaltered from its original form and is still readily taught in Japan, he says. “These are the root teachings of reiki. I’ve instructed thousands of students in this traditional style and have created several shihan.” Jyogan will teach Reiki 1 on September 9 ($225), Reiki 2 on October 14 ($250) and Reiki 3 (Masters Class) on November 11 ($375).
