287326-smitaSmita Jayakar, a chakra healing and meditation expert from India, will lead a workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., May 7, at 286 5th Avenue. “Participants will learn about the chakra system and techniques to tune in to and open up the seven energy centers of the subtle body for a vibrant and balanced mind, body and soul,” says Nandita Kotian of event-management company Transcend Horizons, which is presenting the workshop with the local nonprofit Exhale to Inhale.

Jayakar, who is also a well-known film actress, has 30 years’ experience in chakra meditation. She has held workshops for groups across her native continent, including the Indian Parliament. In addition to meditation, her New York workshop will include detailed instruction in the chakras, an introduction to hand and foot chakras, exercises for all chakras, grounding of the root chakra, aura shielding and practice in hands-on healing and offering gratitude. Participants will receive written certification and learn techniques for practicing at home. The $150 cost includes lunch and tea.

Exhale to Inhale facilitates healing for victims of domestic and sexual abuse by offering free weekly yoga classes at domestic violence shelters and community centers throughout New York City, the Hudson Valley, Long Island and Connecticut.
