The Edgar Cayce Diet for Health

Edgar Cayce, (March 18, 1877 – January 3, 1945) was known as the "Sleeping Prophet" and gave what was known as “readings” on thousands of different topics, including holistic healing. He is the most recorded psychic that ever lived and was featured in the New York Times in 1910.  He is considered by many "The Father of Holistic Medicine" because he lived before the emergence of the New Age movement and influenced many of its teachings.  His clairvoyant abilities made him a celebrity of his time and he founded a nonprofit organization, called the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), to research and explore subjects such as holistic health, ancient mysteries, personal spirituality, dreams and dream interpretation, intuition, philosophy and reincarnation. A.R.E.'s stated mission is to help people change their lives for the better through the ideas and information found in the Edgar Cayce readings.

The New York City A.R.E. Center, located at 241 West 30th Street, offers affordable workshops and individual consultations explaining how to use the Cayce remedies to help bring the body back to its natural state of health. They are currently offering a free copy of the Cayce Biography, "There is a River" upon visit to the NYC center with mention of Natural Awakenings.  At the NYC center, you will find Cayce Health Care Educator, Jack Rosen, who facilitates workshops and shares with Natural Awakenings his experiences using Edgar Cayce Remedies.

The Edgar Cayce Diet for Health

The key to health in the Edgar Cayce readings on diet is to keep the blood system alkaline because it is the normal pH of the blood. The Cayce source said that cold and flu germs couldn’t exist in an alkaline environment.

How to Stop a Cold or Flu

Alkalinizing is also how I have stopped a cold or flu from developing once I notice the symptoms appear. When my nose starts to run, my eyes tear and I start to feel feverish, I stop eating completely. I then take a half-gallon of orange juice and squeeze a lemon into it. I drink a glass of the juice every half hour. Usually within four hours the symptoms start to fade. If I eat lightly the rest of the day, the cold or flu doesn’t develop. Even though folks believe citrus juices are acidic, when metabolized, the effect within the body is alkaline. In my experience, if you go back to eating normally too quickly the cold will come out in full force. Another important point in the Edgar Cayce philosophy is that what comes out of our mouth (what we say) is more important than what we put in. When we are angry and upset, it makes our system acidic—a breeding ground for disease.

Three-Day Apple Cleanse

To cleanse the body of toxins, the Cayce readings recommended eating raw apples for three days, ending the cleanse with between an eighth to a quarter cup of olive oil at the end of the third day. He said to use the Jonathan variety of apples which we know today as red or golden delicious apples. He advised having at least seven apples a day with an equal number of glasses of water. It was OK to have black coffee during the fast but nothing else. This cleanse works for me. At the end of the three days, I’m amazed at how clear my eyes look. The Cayce readings would often recommend a colonic at the end of the fast—proper eliminations being another key to longevity.

Grape Juice for Weight Loss

The Cayce readings recommended using grape juice as an aid to losing weight: Mix four ounces of grape juice with four ounces of water. The juice is to be taken a half hour before each meal and a half hour before going to bed. This would reduce the body’s craving for sugar and help to reduce the appetite. When the craving for sweets arises, the readings say to use honey from the comb.

More Diet Tips from the Cayce Readings:

• Have a salad for lunch using three vegetables that grow above the ground to every one that grows below. Sprinkle unflavored gelatin over the salad—it acts as a catalyst, helping the body to absorb the vitamins and minerals in the salad.

• Fish, fowl and lamb are the meats recommended, but never fried.

• Unless you’re doing heavy labor, stay away from red meat.

• Black coffee is a food but when mixed with milk it is very hard for the body to digest.

• Avoid having two starches at the same meal.

• Avoid eating sugar and starch (ice cream and cake) at the same time .

• Swine was to be avoided, though one could have well-done bacon occasionally.

• The tomato, when vine-ripened, has more vitamins and minerals than any other food.

• Don’t cook in aluminum; cook in parchment paper instead.

• Don’t use any foods that contain benzoate of soda.
